Information for boaters

RULES FOR SAFE NAVIGATION IN THE ADRIATIC

  • Obtain all necessary licences for operating a vessel.
  • Regularly monitor weather forecasts.
  • Check the condition of your vessel, equipment, and ensure sufficient fuel and drinking water supplies.
  • Do not operate a vessel under the influence of alcohol.
  • Adhere to the maximum passenger capacity of the vessel.
  • Use only official nautical charts and navigation publications.
  • Download and use the free NIS – Nautical Information Service app.

RULES FOR DISTANCES FROM THE SHORE

  •  Yachts and boats must maintain a minimum distance of:
  • 50 m from the boundary of designated swimming areas
  • 100 m from a diving buoy (recommended)
  • 150 m from natural swimming areas

Prescribed distances for approaching the shore:

  • Motorboats and sailboats: no closer than 50 m
  • Yachts: no closer than 150 m
  • Ships and seaplanes: no closer than 300 m
  • Small vessels (up to 5 kW) must not venture more than 500 m from the shore.
  • Vessels under 24 m must yield to larger vessels.
  • When entering a port, do not obstruct vessels leaving the port.

 Planing:

Motorboats and jet-propelled vessels may only plane at distances greater than 300 m from the shore, and only in areas where planing is not prohibited.

SPEED LIMITS

  • up to 150 m from the shore: maximum speed of 5 knots
  • from 150 m to 300 m from the shore: maximum speed of 8 knots

MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

It is prohibited to discard solid or liquid waste that pollutes the environment, such as plastic, glass, metal, oily water, and excrement, into the sea.

Archaeological sites and historical ruins must not be damaged under any circumstances. Respect special rules for protected areas such as national parks and nature reserves.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION FOR FOREIGN VESSELS  

  • Registration certificate (navigation permit)
  • Skipper’s certificate for boats or yachts
  • Insurance policy (for engines over 15 kW)
  • Personal identification document
  • Vignette: proof of fee payment upon vessel registration (issued based on the above documents)

PAYMENT OF TOURIST TAX

 You are required to pay a tourist tax for boaters, calculated based on the length of your vessel or the number of persons staying on board. Payments can be made here.
