Fragments of Authenticity: Collections, Galleries, and Souvenir Shops

From the spiritual oasis of highly educated abbots and the treasury of Krk’s bishops to the tools and costumes of the rural people in Kornić, experience the golden splendour of the city and the rustic charm of its surroundings. Visit the valuable collections and galleries in the city and its wider area to revive the spirit of past times!

On the small islet of Košljun, covering an area of only 0.072 km² and reachable by boat from the nearby town of Punat (5 km away), you will find four thematic museum collections: archaeological, sacred, ethnographic, and natural history. Košljun is also a true biodiversity oasis that will take your breath away!

In the heart of Krk, within the 12th-century Church of St Quirinus, you can explore the Cathedral Treasury, managed by the Diocese of Krk. This impressive collection includes stone fragments and valuable artworks from the 9th to the 16th century, among which the gilded Frankopan pala by master Paolo Calori from 1477, commissioned by Ivan VII Frankopan, stands out.

Strolling through the city, you will encounter numerous galleries. Two, Decumanus and Fortis, are primarily exhibition spaces, with the Fortis gallery also featuring a sales section. Other city galleries and souvenir shops offer unique works such as paintings, ceramics, and local handicrafts for purchase.

Just 4 km from Krk lies the small village of Kornić, home to an ethnographic collection housed in a 19th-century stone house. Here, visitors can see what a cooper’s workshop looked like, the tools used for working the land, and methods for storing oil. From the cellar to the bedroom, you can explore every room!

Treasures of Košljun: Museum Collections of the Franciscan Monastery

The archaeological collection includes numerous stone monuments, with highlights such as Liburnian (pre-Romanesque) funerary stelae – cippi – found on Košljun and in Krk, a collection of artefacts from a Hellenistic-early Roman necropolis unearthed on the Šinigoj estate in Krk, and fragments of ancient bricks, ceramics, and amphorae from Košljun and the surrounding coast.

The sacral collection, displayed in the Church of St Bernardine of Siena, features liturgical objects from the Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque periods, including a valuable triptych believed to originate from the workshop of the renowned painter Bartolomeo Vivarini, active during the transition from Gothic to Renaissance art.

The ethnographic collection unveils the richness of island folk costumes, alongside popular numismatic artefacts.

The natural history collection presents minerals, corals, sponges, and fossils, while also showcasing the work of Brother Bernard Barčić, who meticulously studied the flora of Košljun using modern floristic and phytosociological methods. Additionally, the collection highlights unique natural phenomena, birds, fish, and plants native to the islet.
