A Walk Through Cultural Monuments
The prehistoric city of Curicta (Krk) was fortified with walls. When the Romans arrived, they found an already established settlement, which they reshaped to fit their standards. Built on these ancient foundations, later extended in the Romanesque, Renaissance, and baroque styles, the city continues to thrive today.
The city walls, the third-largest in Croatia and a rare example of preservation along our coast. The beautiful city walls are strengthened by a hexagonal tower by the shore and a square tower at Vela Placa (recognisable by its clock), which once served as the city hall and courthouse.
The entire old town is brimming with architectural gems, such as the Frankopan Castle, which now houses the Krk Interpretive Centre as part of the cultural-tourism route “The Frankopan Pathways”.
A part of the city complex is the beautifully paved Kamplin Square, which in antiquity hosted thermal baths and a training area and later became a venue for medieval jousting tournaments. The city boasts the richest sacred heritage on the island, as Krk has been the seat of a bishopric since the 6th century.
While strolling through the old town, you’ll discover the Cathedral of Krk, with its bell tower crowned by a distinctive baroque dome that has become a symbol of the city. The cathedral complex includes the twin Romanesque churches of St Quirinus and St Margaret (St Quirinus is also the patron saint of the city). Within the walls, you’ll also find the three-aisled Church of Our Lady of Health, as well as Benedictineand Franciscan monasteries with their respective churches.
Krk can be described as a museum in the making. Its ancient remains are still being uncovered during renovations of private properties in the old town centre. For instance, at Volsonis bar, you can sit beside an altar from Venus’s temple or in the garden, right next to a recently discovered section of the city walls. You’ll find remnants of Venus’s temple when you visit the private shop Memento, and there are more surprises in store for visitors. Stay tuned for updates and enjoy the increasingly rich offerings of our town!
