Plavnik: An ecological jewel of Kvarner

The islet of Plavnik is an ideal destination for seekers of unspoiled nature and tranquillity. Here, you can observe 31 bird species, dive into underwater caves, or relax on secluded beaches.

This small uninhabited island, located between Krk and Cres, spans approximately 8.64 km². Despite its modest size, it harbours numerous features of a unique ecological oasis. Plavnik is one of the few places in Croatia where you can see griffon vultures in their natural habitat. These magnificent birds of prey, with wingspans of up to 2.8 metres, are a protected species.

The island is home to about 30 other bird species, including the golden eagle, kestrel, and little owl. Since there are no freshwater sources on Plavnik, its fauna depends on pools, which provide habitats for rare amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. You may also encounter many sheep on the island and pods of dolphins in the surrounding waters.

Around Plavnik, you’ll find exciting diving locations such as the Mafia Wreck, Indian’s Rock, and underwater caves. The Blue Cave, in particular, offers a thrilling experience as you can swim into it. All these sites can only be explored under the guidance of professional divers or instructors.

You can reach Plavnik via private boats or tours, which you can inquire about at Krk’s waterfront.

Due to the sensitive ecological balance, the importance of preserving the natural environment in Plavnik is of great importance. This especially applies to griffon vultures, which are an extremely endangered species. Therefore, please do not sail too close to the cliffs, do not play loud music and do not shout, because this can endanger the young birds who are preparing for their first flight and are extremely sensitive to noise.
