Kornić and Lakmartin: A taste of rural life

If you head east from Krk, you’ll find the villages of Kornić and Lakmartin just seven kilometres away.

On your way to Kornić, stop by the Romanesque Church of St Dunat, dating back to the 12th century. This is one of the most significant monuments of early Croatian architecture. In Kornić itself, be sure to visit the local ethnographic collection housed in a traditional stone house, offering a glimpse into rural life from a century ago. Dominating the village is the Parish Church of St James the Apostle, which also serves as the final stop of Krk’s Camino stage.

Lakmartin is an ideal escape, a tiny village of stone houses with only about 30 permanent residents. Use your visit to sample olive oil and cheese at the local Magriž dairy. According to them, their cheeses carry the flavours of rocky landscapes, aromatic herbs, and sea salt crystals – it’s up to you to confirm this.

In the village, you’ll also find the Chapel of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, tied to an intriguing history. In the early 18th century, with the Venetian Doge’s permission, this chapel was built by 11 families working together. They also founded the Fraternity of St Anthony, which still oversees the chapel’s maintenance and the celebration of holy masses. Its members are elected annually on the feast day of St Anthony of Padua.
